Elenchos comes from the ancient Greek term (ἔλεγχος) meaning "refutation, scrutiny", originally referred to putting something to the test, such as assaying a precious metal to test its properties. It subsequently became associated with the Socratic method, in which Socrates draws out true knowledge by claiming to know nothing and instead put to the test others who claimed to be knowledgeable.
